Letter: Take a global view

In considering the current debates and debacles about immigration, both here and in other parts of the world, it might serve us all to remember that, for the vast majority of the world’s 7-plus billion inhabitants, nationality is an accident of birth and not a fate determined by their personal worth. For this reason we should proceed with both common sense and compassion when making laws and judgments about who may or may not have the right and freedom to pursue residence in a country other than that into which they were born. And I believe we should all be looking for solutions that provide the possibility of a better life to all citizens of the world, not just those who happen to have been born in America. We Americans should all ask ourselves if we would graciously accept our fate had we been born in Somalia or Guatemala, or if we would feel we had the right to pursue a better life and future for ourselves and our families.
