Community notebook: Little League district champions headed to state

Little League district champions are being crowned as local baseball and softball teams are heading to state tournaments.

In Little League Softball majors division (ages 10-12), Camas won the District 4 title by beating Cascade 14-0 on Saturday at Brush Prairie, while La Center won the District 6 title by beating Battle Ground twice 10-0 and 6-2 last week at Yacolt.

Camas and La Center advance to state, which will be held June 30-July 9 at Vancouver hosted by Columbia Little League.

The Washington state champion moves on to the Western Regional in San Bernardino, Calif., for a shot at the Little League Softball World Series in Portland.

In Junior softball (ages 12-14), East County Little League won the District 4 title, 12-8 over Evergreen to advance to state at Poulsbo beginning Saturday.

In 8-10 softball, Battle Ground beat Ridgefield twice to win the District 6 title. Scores were 9-8 and 15-11. Battle Ground advances to state at Cheney beginning July 7.

Other district tournament are just under way or begin next week around Clark County.

Curt Daniels Invite to be at River, Concordia

The 12-team Curt Daniels Invitational baseball tournament returns for its 14th year July 4-9.

Games will be played at Columbia River High School and Concordia University in Portland.

Local American Legion teams the Vancouver Cardinals and Vancouver Mavericks are taking part.

The Cardinals draw players from Skyview, Hudson’s Bay, Ridgefield and Hockinson high schools, while the Mavericks have players from Camas, Union and Mountain View.

The tournament kicks off on July 4 with the Mavericks taking on Narrows Baseball Club at 12:30 p.m. at Columbia River, and the Cardinals playing Portland Baseball Club at 1:30 p.m. at Concordia.

The championship round is July 9 at Concordia. Semifinals will be at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and the championship at 3 p.m.

McChesney fastest in latest CCRC run

Vancouver’s Jesse McChesney topped the 103 runners who participated in the Clark County Running Club’s Heritage High School 5K No. 2 on June 20.

His time was 17 minutes, 22 seconds.

Dan Nehnevaj of Vancouver placed second in 17:44, and Jere Dietz was third in 18:17. Katarina Mueller of Vancouver was the top women’s placer, coming in ninth overall in 19:38.

Next on the CCRC schedule is the Grass Valley 5K at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Camas at Grass Valley Park.

Coming up in July are the Washougal Dike 3-mile runs at 7 p.m. July 11 and 18, and the Round Lake 3-mile run at 7 p.m. July 25.

Heroes’ Challenge events set for July 4

The multi-event Heroes’ Challenge will take place on July 4 at Washougal. The start/finish will be at Captain William Clark Park on Cottonwood Beach.

Take part in a 30-mile bike ride (8:30 a.m. start), or a 10K run at 9 a.m., or a 5K walk/run at 9:15 a.m. There is also a 300-meter run for kids at 10:30 a.m.

Cost is $25 for any event prior to July 4. Day-of-race entry fee is $35. Kids events (9-and-under) are free.

All race entry fees go directly to helping local heroes through Point Man Ministries of Clark County. T-shirts will be given to those who raise $100 or more prior to race day, and one who brings in the most over $500 will win a night at Skamania Lodge.

Get your 3 on 3 team together for August

The Hoops 360 3 on 3 basketball tournament returns Aug. 17-19 with an outdoor venue in Camas including night games.

Registration fee is $140 a team and there are divisions for boys and girls in all grade levels plus divisions for high school and adults.

Vancouver Rodeo returns July 4-7

The Vancouver Rodeo is set for July 4-7 at the Clark County Saddle Club, located at 10505 N.E. 117th Ave.

This is a Northwest Professional Rodeo Association event featuring bareback riding, saddle bronc, barrel racing, breakaway roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, and of course, bull riding.

Performance times are 1 p.m. on July 4 and 7 p.m. on July 5-6-7. There will be a slack performance at 9 a.m. Friday.

Ticket prices range from $25 for box seats, $15 for reserved, and $10 for general admission. There is a $2 discount for seniors, military and children up to age 12. There is no admission charge for the slack. Parking will be $5.

The Cowboy Breakfast is 8-11 a.m. on July 6.

Vancouver Victory shut out by Seattle

The Seattle Stars handed the Vancouver Victory their worst-ever home defeat in five seasons on Sunday with a 5-0 win at Harmony Sports Complex.

Seattle (6-2-0) stayed atop the Coastal Division and with the most points in the Evergreen Premier League. Tyler Bjork scored twice for the Stars.

Vancouver is in third place in the Coastal Division (3-3-0). The next match for the Victory is 6 p.m. Saturday against Oly Town at Black Hills High School in Olympia.

Vancouver’s home game against Oly Town on June 17 that was postponed due to lightning has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. July 15 at Harmony.
