A Clark County man is among 40 people sickened by salmonella bacteria in a national outbreak linked to kratom.

State and federal health officials on Friday recommended people not consume kratom or any products containing kratom because it may be contaminated with salmonella. Kratom is a plant consumed for its stimulant effects and as an opioid substitute, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The current salmonella outbreak linked to kratom products involves 40 people in 27 states. Of those, 14 people have been hospitalized. In Washington, three salmonella cases have been linked to the national outbreak, including a Clark County man in his 30s. He was not hospitalized, according to the state Department of Health.

Those sickened reported consuming kratom in pills, powder and tea. Kratom can also be chewed or smoked, according to health officials.

Federal health officials haven’t connected the outbreak to a specific kratom brand or supplier, which is why the CDC is advising against consuming any form of kratom.
