Letter: Pitch in for Confluence

By Colin Fogarty, Vancouver
Published: March 18, 2018, 6:00am

I am responding to the March 11 letter “Clean up Vancouver Land Bridge.” As executive director of Confluence, the Vancouver-based organization that built this and four other sites along the Columbia River system, I couldn’t agree more that this extraordinary structure, designed by architect Johnpaul Jones, requires constant care.

As a small nonprofit, we do our best through work parties and a small endowment. We primarily rely on our strong partnerships with public agencies: the city of Vancouver responds to graffiti on the land bridge itself, while the Washington Department of Transportation cleans up graffiti that is accessed from the highway.

From our experience, these agencies are fully committed to this important work. But as noted by The Columbian on March 13 in “Taggers hit their targets,” graffiti appears to be on the rise, and it is a challenge to keep up with. Confluence is grateful to our public partners for their hard work and dedication.

Meanwhile, we could use your help! On April 21, during Earth Day weekend, Confluence and the city of Vancouver are organizing a mulch party on the land bridge, to take care of the native plants along its path. Join us! Find out more on at www.confluenceproject.org or call us at 360-693-0123.
