A Ridgefield homeowner was injured Tuesday when she tried to extinguish a fire in the garage of her Ridgefield home before firefighters arrived.

The woman’s injuries were minor, and they prompted a warning about her actions.

“People should really not attempt to fight fires themselves. She’s lucky she wasn’t injured more severely,” said Clark County Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Dawdy.

Firefighters with CCFR and Fire District 6 responded to 19521 N.E. 15th Ave. about 8:47 a.m., according to dispatch logs.

The homeowner smelled smoke and then her smoke alarmed triggered; she discovered a fire in her garage. The fire is believed to have originated in a heater, Dawdy said. She called for help before attempting to fight the fire, he said.

Firefighters extinguished the fire within 10 minutes and were able to keep it confined to the garage.

Medics examined the homeowner on scene, and she refused treatment, Dawdy said.

The Clark County Fire Marshal is investigating the fire’s cause.
