A man at the scene of a garage fire in Salmon Creek on Thursday morning told Clark County Fire District 6 firefighters he was grinding a piece of metal when a spark touched gasoline.

Firefighters were dispatched about 7:12 a.m. to 2318 N.W. 151st St.

Two engines and a battalion chief responded to what was described as a 12- by 12-foot shed or garage shop, said Fire District 6 spokesman Dave Schmitke.

The shop is used for lawn mower repair, Schmitke said. A man said he was inside working on the piece of metal when one of the sparks flying from a grinding wheel landed on gasoline.

According to emergency radio traffic monitored at The Columbian, the man was fighting the fire with a water hose when responders arrived.

Firefighters quickly arrived at the shop and extinguished the blaze. The building appeared to have not suffered major damage, Schmitke said.

The shop is located between two other structures that did not catch fire.

The Clark County Fire Marshal was called out to investigate.
