Weather Eye: Parade-perfect weather on tap for the weekend

The clouds hung around longer than forecast Wednesday, keeping us below average on the high temperature for the first time in a while. No complaints after the heat in recent days. Today we start off with more clouds but I think we see sun breaks by afternoon and get close to 70 degrees. Friday the same but warmer. Saturday will be perfect parade weather for the big event in Hazel Dell.

Because some forecast models are at odds in the extended period, I see the National Weather Service has a slight chance of showers this weekend and most of next week. I think we stay dry with no general rains in the offing. We are getting close to the Rose Festival, so I guess showers can always suddenly appear.

Over the decades I always planted my warm-weather crops on Mother’s Day weekend and last weekend I’m sure many of you went all out and planted your gardens. Good deal, the soil is warmer and dry and the danger of frost is past in most areas of the county. There are a view holdouts that could still see a frost for another week or two.

Our friends in the Puget Sound region up to Bellingham had plenty of sunshine Wednesday, while Southwest Washington was under the thick low cloud shield. East of the mountains in both Washington and Oregon, scattered thunderstorms were present with some areas of heavy rain. Yakima at 4 p.m. Wednesday had heavy rain.

So far this month we are running way above normal for the average mean temperature. With more warm weather expected in May it will go into the record books as a warm one. And much drier than average, too. I’m still thinking it is going to be a warm, maybe hot, summer and a dry one too. Probably won’t be long before we hear of wildfires.

Enjoy the pleasant weekend and take a look at the Columbia River this weekend, as it will be at or slightly over flood stage. Lots of snowmelt from far away going by our town.
