An 18-year-old Vancouver high school student appeared in Clark County Superior Court on Friday, facing potential child pornography charges.

Leonardo Shuji Ruiz-Idera was arrested on suspicion of 10 counts of first-degree possessing depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Deputy Prosecutor Katie Sinclair requested $20,000 bail, citing a concern for community safety. Police found hundreds of files of child pornography on devices used by the teen, Sinclair said.

A court-appointed defense attorney noted Ruiz-Idera’s lack of criminal history and said the young man is weeks away from graduating from high school.

Judge John Fairgrieve set bail at $10,000 and an arraignment hearing for May 25.

The Vancouver Police Department’s Digital Evidence Cybercrime Unit began investigating March 29 after receiving a lead from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding a Dropbox account containing 363 files of suspected child pornography, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Dropbox indicated that the account’s user name, “Leonardo Ruiz-Idera” was using a Google email address to upload the files, the affidavit states.

A search warrant was served on the account, where 41 folders were found containing video and photos of child pornography, depicting girls ages 4 to 13, court records say.

Investigators then served a search warrant at Ruiz-Idera’s residence May 16, and contacted him the next day. He reportedly admitted that the Dropbox and email accounts were his. He said he uses the Dropbox account to seek adult pornography. Ruiz-Idera denied seeking child pornography. He said those images automatically saved to his account when he was seeking out legal pornography, according to court documents.

However, his statement contradicted what investigators found. Ruiz-Idera later changed his story and admitted to seeking out child pornography depicting girls between the ages of 9 to 15, the affidavit states.
