WASHOUGAL — Camas and Washougal community members can help school families with summer meals by donating food and filling food boxes next week.
St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Washougal is organizing its fourth annual IMPACT CW, which will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 10 at Parker’s Landing Historical Park at the Port of Camas-Washougal. People can drop off food donations, help fill boxes and enjoy a barbecue lunch while listening to music by the Camas-Washougal Community Orchestra.
Beth Raetz, IMPACT CW committee member and church office secretary, said in a news release that Pastor Bob Barber started the event, which was prompted by a sermon series. Last year, 140 food boxes were put together during IMPACT CW; this year’s goal is 200 boxes.
“We are targeting families in the schools who receive free breakfast and free lunches and are a part of the backpack programs,” Raetz said in the news release. “When school stops for summer those meals end. These kids may get into a summer meal program, but there could be several weeks before they start. These meals will help to bridge that gap. It just gives them a boost.”
