I'm probably more tech savvy than your average reporter. I'll
google the ingredients in my fridge before I think to look in my cookbook
for recipes. I keep in touch with long-distance friends through e-mail
lists and Web forums. I've wasted more than a few hours playing
geeky video games. But computers are not my life. I like to bake,
hike, ski, eat, listen to live music, read, run and travel. I use
technology, but I haven't taken all that much time to understand
how it works.
Most of us haven't, even though we depend on technology to keep run our homes, cars, cell phones and offices. Thousands of jobs in Clark County go into designing and making computer chips, or selling products that are related to chips in some way. The solar industry has a foothold here. There are software companies, networking companies, engineering labs, telecommunications providers, home-grown mom-and-pop Web retailers, and massive international corporations.
I was hired in February 2006 to write about all these companies for The Columbian's five-person business team.
Writing about the Clark County high-tech scene has been quite a learning experience. With each story I explore, I have to understand enough about what a company is doing to explain it in the everyday language that people with no engineering training can understand.
In addition to staying abreast of high-tech companies, I also cover Clark Public Utilities and the ports of Ridgefield and Woodland. I write about breaking news on any business-related topic as needed. I try to contribute regularly to The Columbian's Business Blog.
I'm also interested in personal finance, especially the money challenges that younger people face.
With this online bio, I'm trying something new. I hope by reading about me and my job, you can get a better understanding of The Columbian, and maybe you'll even feel a little more connected to all of us. If you've got any feedback - or if you have tips about happenings in the high-tech business world - please get in touch: courtney.sherwood@columbian.com or 360-759-8041.
