Progressive faith summit set for Sunday
Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church will host a gathering of local faith communities that want to advocate for lasting change in the state of Washington. The faith summit is set for 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church, 12513 S.E. Mill Plain Blvd. The co-host for the event is the First Congregational Church of Christ in Hazel Dell, a prominent local advocate of social justice.
Cheer team stands out at national championship
Northeast Hazel Dell — Vancouver's All-Star Fusion Senior Teal team placed second this month at The Summit, a cheerleading competition in its first year that aims to bring together the best of the best from across the country. The girls competed against four other teams at the two-day event that kicked off May 3 in Orlando, Fla. The local team was invited to The Summit after they won first place in April at the Encore National Cheer Championship in San Diego, Calif.

As part of their "Spring Break Days of Service," Volunteer and Service Learning program students spent the afternoon of March 28 with Washington State University Extension Master Gardeners to weed, transplant and prune in the community garden, 511 N.E. Anderson Road. "Clark College has been a fantastic partner. Working in the HD School and Community Garden is a learning experience for the students and makes an incredible difference in the garden," said Barbara Nordstrom, garden coordinator. Last summer, there was a Columbian story about the reconnected Burnt Bridge Creek trail. It said those weird "welded wire walls" near the St. Johns overpass would discourage vandalism. Well, last time I went by there, graffiti was all over the place. To my eye, what was theoretically difficult to vandalise now looks extremely difficult to clean up.
