An apparent domestic disturbance incident led to a report of a child being shot at in the Hazel Dell area Thursday morning, but Clark County sheriff’s deputies quickly determined the report was likely unfounded.
Kids bike to school en masse
Hazel Dell -- Several local schools took part in National Bike to School Day on May 8, when children rode to class with family and learned about bicycle safety. Clark County Public Health coordinated the events with help from other local agencies. The local Bike to School Day efforts involved hundreds of students and volunteers at Anderson, Washington, Roosevelt and Walnut Grove elementary schools. In addition to the special ride, many kids were fitted for and given new bike helmets.

Hazel Dell -- The Society of Washington Artists, based in Vancouver, held its 51st open-entry professionally judged spring art show at the Harley H. Hall building on Northeast Seventh Avenue. It was SWA's largest fundraiser to date, with 197 entries contributed by 85 artists. Julie Olson of Washougal won the People's Choice award with her "Ghost," which also won a first place award for pastels; Ramona Kmetz-Lauzon of Longview won the first place award in the oil and acrylics category for "Onions"; John Turley of Vancouver won first place for watercolors with "Focused." The pit bull that bit a 3-year-old Hazel Dell girl will be euthanized at the end of the month. The dog's owner, a woman from Ridgefield, turned the dog over to Clark County Animal Control and Protection, which put the dog on a 10-day quarantine.
