Local police agencies are gearing up for another nighttime round of enforcing the state’s mandatory seat belt laws.

From May 19 through June 1, officers will work overtime to spot motorists and passengers who are not wearing seat belts, stop them, and issue citations. The officers will be both in marked patrol cars and stationary observers. In a previous round, one officer posed as a transient at a freeway offramp.

Agencies participating include the Washington State Patrol, Clark County Sheriff’s Office and Vancouver Police Department. The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is funded by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

According to a commission news release, the patrols will take place after 7 p.m. because the traffic death rate at night is four times greater than daytime.

Does this surprise anyone? Just yesterday I saw a news story about Vancouver PD being strapped for cash. Now they suddenly decide to have this sting in the name of 'public safety'.

I wonder how cops feel being made into revenue generators.

It might actually do some good for the police to ENFORCE THE LAW. I do wish they would do some SPEED ENFORCEMENT as well. The speed LIMITS aren't "minimum speed required" as so many seem to think. I welcome seat belt patrols. Thank you VPD for doing your job!

Keeping the public scared by punishing them for crimes that harm nobody. Seat belts should be voluntary. And speeding is not dangerous by iteself.

They should be out there looking for the real criminals, the ones that negatively effect our lives, not just the suicidal ones.

Well Spiffy, people who drive above the speed limit are, indeed, using up our valuable non-renewable oil reserves. Driving 10 mph over the 60 mph speed limit in effect costs the driver 50 cents more per gallon of gas, because it uses up the gas faster (and ends up getting the passengers to their destination, perhaps, a few seconds or a minute sooner). So, maybe higher speeds don't "cause" more injuries or deaths, but they sure are criminal in my book, because they involve selfish drivers who don't care about conserving our limited resources. I'm personally happy when cops stop them and ticket them. Hopefully it makes them think twice about speeding even more.

And people who don't use seat belts are simply idiots. Perhaps it's better if they get killed, as it lessens the chances of them reproducing (I'm joking here).

That is really nifty! Cops with super hero powers that can see in the dark. Now the really bad guys had better watch out! Just think of all the bad crimes they can stop now, like murder, rape, assault, and people driving on an expired license! We all trust cops, junior prosecutors, and judges would never allow cops to use imaginary un-latched seatbelts as an excuse to bust some for…lets say, a DUI. And even if it did happen, as long as the drunk driver is a cop, no problem! The “new girl” would just “misplace” the paper work, the clock runs out, and you get to be a cop with super night vision, and no history of being a drunk that is paid enforce the law. God bless americia.
