In Our View: Help out on Saturday
Friday, May 09, 2008
Soaring food prices affect every American, not the least of whom are those who depend on local food banks. Fortunately, in Clark County, whose residents continually demonstrate a widespread communal generosity, there are two huge annual events that help local food banks.
One will occur tomorrow. The National Association of Letter Carriers’ “Stamp Out Hunger” drive will be accepting donations of nonperishable food items.
Place your food donations near your mailbox on Saturday morning before your letter carrier arrives, and the food will be taken to a nearby post office, then delivered to local food banks.
The letter carriers ask that you not include food items on which “use-by” dates have expired or foods that are in glass containers.
Recommended items include canned meats, fish, soup, vegetables and fruit, and packaged pasta, cereal and rice.
If for some strange reason you lack compassion or a generous attitude, then you can take the totally selfish approach and look at it this way: Tomorrow will be a great time to clean out your pantry. Remember all that stuff that looked so enticing on the grocery shelf but has taken up space in your cabinet with no chance of being used? Clean it out, and take it to your mailbox.
The second annual massive food drive, of course, is the local Walk & Knock program on the first Saturday in December. Whether it’s the vast army of volunteers who power the Walk & Knock drive, or the letter carriers who make the extra effort to collect food on “Stamp Out Hunger” day, it’s always gratifying to see philanthropy on parade in Clark County. |
