The Wind River Canopy Crane north of Carson has been retired after 16 years of service, during which it carried scientists 25 stories up into the forest canopy to learn more about how old-growth forests function. The extending arm, or jib, will be removed, leaving the 230-foot tower, which will continue to monitor tree growth and carbon flow in the 500-year-old stand.
