The Leichner Landfill, shown here in the late 1980s, closed for good in 1991. Clark County has agreed to purchase the landfill and some surrounding property for $1.5 million, hoping to eventually reuse the land.

Many residents who lived near the Leichner Landfill remember the sights and smells of the former dump, with seagulls often circling overhead. More than 20 years after its closure, Clark County now hopes to reuse the land as regulators continue to monitor it.
