Most C-Tran buses have six or seven on-board surveillance cameras, including at least one facing outward from the front windshield. Video from those cameras is sometimes used in traffic investigations.

C-Tran uses video from its on-board bus cameras for a variety of reasons, mostly mundane, according to field operations manager Bob Medcraft. A $1.35 million project will replace the agency's bus surveillance system in the coming year with the help of a federal grant.

C-Tran now uses docking stations to download and view video taken from bus surveillance cameras. Some of the equipment dates to the mid-1990s, but will be replaced as part of a system upgrade planned for the coming year.
