Physical science technician Kate Norton prepares to photograph a sediment sample Tuesday. Norton is studying how asbestos levels in the Sumas River in northern Washington and British Columbia affect movement of sediment through the river. The Cascades Volcano Observatory has one of eight sediment labs in the United States. Although the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption spurred its creation, the lab also studies sediment issues not related to volcanoes.
