U.S. Geological Survey scientist David Johnston was stationed at what’s now known as Johnston Ridge on the morning of May 18, 1980. He was among 57 people killed by the massive eruption. This photo was taken one day earlier.

Steven Lane/The Columbian Visitors to Johnston Ridge Observatory near Mount St. Helens will be greeted by a new outdoor amphitheater finished late last year. Johnston Ridge and other facilities near the mountain are free today, the anniversary of the mountain’s 1980 eruption.
