Pointe shoes worn by Lauren Herrmann, left and Autumn Cassity, of Columbia Dance, have a hard box in the toe enabling dancers to dance on their toes, or en pointe. Principal dancers can wear out a pair of shoes, costing a minimum of $50, during a single performance.
