Twice she went through the application process for Catholic religious orders and twice the community cited her father's drinking and mental illness as reasons to reject her. After her second rejection, she cried herself to sleep. Then a nun named Sister Faith urged her to give it one more try. She did, and her acceptance led her to Maryland, West Virginia, Massachusetts, Mississippi and, finally, Tuscaloosa, Ala., where she now serves as regional director for Catholic Social Services of West Alabama. On opposite sides of the world, the brother and sister sat transfixed, reading a stranger's account of long-ago secrets and deeply buried sins. While shocking in its way, the document didn't surprise these siblings, for the sins it described were the sins of their father. And they, too, had fallen victim to his abuse. The story of Brandon Gray is the story of the inaction of the Boy Scouts of America. For his children, it is the story of what happens when secrecy reigns and what might have been if not for the Boy Scouts' silence. (AP Photo/Dave Martin)

FILE - These July 2008 file photos Freddie Mac headquarters in McLean, Va., and Fannie Mae headquarters in Washington. President Barack Obama sang the praises in his State of the Union speech of a bill to help more homeowners with mortgages backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac take advantage of low interest rates and refinance their mortgages. But while the bill could gain traction in the Democratic-controlled Senate, it faces a rough road in the GOP-run House, where many Republicans favor scaling back the government's role in the housing market to boost the economy. Similar versions of the measure died in the House and Senate's lame duck sessions in 2012. (AP Photo/File)
