Two eighth grade girls who attended Chief Umtuch Middle School in Battle Ground committed suicide. The school staff has aggressively addressed the issues of teen suicide, bullying and cyberbullying in an advisory class, assemblies and a workshop for parents. The school also trains students in peer mediation to help kids work out problems before they get out of hand.

Sarah Miller, 14, and Madison Schumacher, 14, eighth-grade students at Chief Umtuch Middle School, advocate for students being proactive and seeking help if they experience bullying. After two classmates committed suicide about six weeks apart, Principal Dave Cresap sent a letter home to parents informing them about bullying on Facebook and the term "frenemy." In a Columbian interview, he said, "Suicide has hit us pretty hard. It's important that kids get a message of hope."

Larry Sperry of Vancouver receives dialysis treatment at Fresenius Medical Care in Salmon Creek. Sperry has end stage renal disease and has been on dialysis for nearly a year.

Larry Sperry receives dialysis treatment at Fresenius Medical Care in Salmon Creek. For nine months, Sperry underwent treatment three days a week on the center's nocturnal shift from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. Now, he receives treatment during afternoons.
