Gabriel Morales shakes hands with his teachers at Heritage High School's commencement ceremony at McKenzie Stadium on Thursday night. Less than two weeks before graduation, Morales learned he wasn't graduating because he failed a state reading assessment. He and his grandmother learned he could pull together a collection of evidence, called a COE, a sample of his work showing reading proficiency, to meet the graduation requirement.
