U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service workers pull a tule fall chinook salmon from a seine in the lower White Salmon River in September 2011. The Fisheries Ecosystem Plan now under review highlights an often overlooked path to boosting the populations of salmon and other marine wildlife: protecting the small forage fish they eat.

A tule fall chinook salmon is released into the White Salmon River below Husum Falls Friday. Biologists hope to capture and transport 500 of the spawning fall chinook above Condit Dam before the end of the run.
