We adopted Nikki on 12/19/2013 from the Humane Society for Southwest Washington in east Vancouver. She was stinky, had a skin condition, and also had a tumor on her back leg. We fell in love with her instantly! We got her the medications she needed for her skin and infected ears, had the tumor removed and keep her regularly groomed. Today, age 10, she's having several teeth extracted as we continue to want to give her a high-quality life in her last years. We are her forever home! (Shelley Houle)

Bear with Mary on Christmas day. Bear came from the Vancouver Humane Society For SW Washington, adopted six weeks ago. Mixed bread part Terrier and Dochsund. Came up from California. I volunteer at the Humane society as a dog walker and Bear and I hit it off right away. Just had to make him part of the family.

Roman was found in a dumpster with his siblings in 2012 with his mother tied outside of the dumpster. Many of his siblings didn't make it but Roman was rescued and nursed back to health by Must Love Dogs NW. My daughter Courtney adopted him in 2012 and he is now a registered Service Dog for Courtney, who has a debilitating genetic disorder. Courtney not only saved his life, but he saved hers. He is the center of the family's universe and we don't know what we would do without him. (Shannon Decker)

Charlie is our 4 year old German Sheppard/Lab mixture that we adopted in February of this year. Charlie came from a shelter in California to Oregon Humane Society where we found him. He is a great addition to our family and loves our granddaughter. (BILL DOVER)

Hattie turned up as a stray at my father's home in 2013. She did not have any identification, was not chipped and no one had reported a dog of her description missing. Because my father lived at the end of a dead-end road in a rural area, we think she was brought there and abandoned. I brought her home to Vancouver with me and discovered that she was well-behaved, house-broken and knew basic commands. Given her terrier heritage, she lives to chase balls, and she also has become an excellent hiker and backpacker. Photo by Susan Saul

A "puppy" New Years eve get together in Olympia. All five dogs were adopted from shelters. Bottom L-R. Murphy (Multnomah County Humane Society), Harley (West Columbia Gorge Humane Society), Kai Kai, (West Columbia Gorge Humane Society), Goose (God's Dog's, TX), and Angel (West Columbia Gorge Humane Society). The dogs are members of three related families which get together often. The dogs are always excited to visit each other. Included in the photo are two owners, Lorraine Steele and Anna Minor. The photographer is Anna Lookingbill.

Paddy was rescued as a 5 week old pup trotting down a highway in Bend Oregon. His tail was weirdly bent as someone had tried to stub it with a band. His rescuer could not take care of him and so a picture was sent out to various contacts through email. My husband has Parkinson's and we were looking for a companion dog. He has become that and so much more. As one can see in our image, he is absolutely devoted to our grandchildren. When they visit they never leave his sight. Pictured is Paddy and our granddaughter, Amaya, singing a duet. Additionally, he provides warm, loving devotion to us both each and every day. (Anne John)

Luna is a Great Dane/Lab? Mix with wild ears! On a Saturday, last February, she was found in a field as a nursing mom, chased, tranquilized and taken to a high kill shelter in Sacramento. Thanks to Oregon Humane Society and the fact that they take dogs out of California, Luna came to Portland the next Wednesday. On Thursday, she was spayed and her picture put online Friday morning. I saw her and my husband and I went to see her as soon as OHS opened. As we waited for Luna to be brought in, I said to my husband that I didn’t think she would be what we wanted. She walked in, came over and kissed my husband on the cheek. She adopted us! She knew that we were her people.
As with most rescues, she was terrified of everything. We’ve had to go very slowly with her but she is quite comfortable now. Augie the cat, (also a rescue) and Luna have become friends and our other rescue cat, Zeke is finally adjusting to her. Luna has been a wonderful addition to our family. (Carolyn Swenson)
