Bio: Maria Cantwell was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2000 and re-elected in 2006. She previously served two two-year terms as a Washington state representative and one term as a U.S. representative.
Cantwell chairs the Senate Subcommittee on Energy, as well as the Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard. She serves on the committees of Commerce, Science and Transportation; Energy and Natural Resources; Finance; Indian Affairs; and Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
Cantwell was born Oct. 13, 1958, in Indianapolis. Before getting elected to public office, she worked as a public relations consultant and was a senior vice president at RealNetworks, a tech company known for its work with online audio and video streaming. She earned a bachelor's degree in public policy in 1980 from the Miami University of Ohio.
