Bio: Patty Murray was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992. Before that, she served one four-year term as a Washington state senator.

As a member of the U.S. Senate, Murray chairs the Veteran's Affairs committee, and is conference secretary of the Democratic caucus. In the fall of 2011, she co-chaired the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, also known as the "Super Committee." The Super Committee failed to meet its goal of cutting $1.2 trillion from the federal deficit.

The congresswoman serves on the committees of Appropriations; Budget; Rules and Administration; and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Her subcommittees include: Children and Families; Defense; Employment and Workplace Safety; Energy and Water Development; and Homeland Security.

Murray was born Oct. 11, 1950, in Seattle and worked as an educator and a lobbyist before being elected to public office. She earned a bachelor's degree in 1972 from Washington State University.
