An arbitrator has awarded Vancouver police commanders a 5.1 percent wage increase in 2011 after keeping their wages frozen since 2009. I'm thinking:

This is good for the community and good for the commanders. Looks reasonable. (20.94% - 143 votes)

Please, these folks already make almost $110,000 including overtime, but not benefits and pensions. With the economy like it is, this is crazy. (50.95% - 348 votes)

Someone has to change the law that says arbitrators can't take into account a city's ability to pay for these raises. Can any city manage under that law? (28.11% - 192 votes)

Vancouver has received a $2.3 million federal grant to reopen a fire station. I'm thinking:

This is good news. Reopening the station means firefighters can respond to calls, including medical emergencies, faster. (50.00% - 77 votes)

I'm concerned because even though the grant may increase local public safety, it adds to the federal budget deficit. (21.43% - 33 votes)

This is a bad idea. Firefighters shouldn't even repond to medical calls, which would leave the existing stations more than adequately staffed. (28.57% - 44 votes)

Should more students be encouraged to walk to school?

Yes. Walking is a great form of excerise, and today's kids could use more of it. (53.02% - 123 votes)

Yes. Taxpayers shouldn't have to pay to run buses starting only a half-mile from schools. (31.47% - 73 votes)

No. Even with crossing guards, it's too dangerous these days for children to walk more than a few blocks. (15.52% - 36 votes)

No, it's our obligation to help those in need, wherever it might be in the world. (20.26% - 299 votes)

Should more local women be encouraged to run for political office?

Yes. With only 10 of 52 local offices held by women, something needs to be done to recruit more female candidates. (21.09% - 31 votes)

No. Candidates should be recruited for their ideas, not their gender. (68.71% - 101 votes)

No. Business and political interests should have no business in recruiting candidates for public office. (10.20% - 15 votes)

Should there be a county-wide vote to gauge how residents feel about the proposed Columbia River Bridge, tolls and light rail?

Of course there should be. I see no downside to better understanding what residents are feeling and a vote is the way to go. (65.59% - 1,336 votes)

No vote. This bridge is about more than just Clark County residents and a representative form of government means our representatives must make decisions. (32.35% - 659 votes)

No opinion. (2.06% - 42 votes)

Should some school districts be consolidated?

Yes. It makes no sense for small-town districts to each have their own administration and other expensive overhead costs. (45.74% - 86 votes)

No. School districts are key to a community's identity and need to be preserved. (12.77% - 24 votes)

School districts should only be consolidated if voters in each district give their approval. (41.49% - 78 votes)
