Earth Day in the U.S.
Sen. NelsonEarth Day was started by the late Senator Gaylord Nelson. He thought of the idea in 1962, but it did not catch on in politics until 1969. During a conference in Seattle, Nelson announced that there would be a day in the spring where there would be a demonstration on behalf of the environment. Camas native and Clark College graduate Denis Hayes was the national coordinator for the first Earth Day. He was a staffer for Nelson.
