NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — The new Russian owner of the lowly New Jersey Nets says the team will be better although he has backed off his bold prediction of making the playoffs this season.

In a champagne toast before the Nets’ season opener against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night, Mikhail Prokhorov asked fans to give the Nets time to rebound from a franchise-worst 12-win season.

The self-assured Russian quipped he was calm before watching his team play at the Prudential Center and he was hoping the revamped team can have some fun.

One of the richest men in Russia, Prokhorov intends to spent the rest of the week in the United States, seeing his team play three times, including a Sunday matinee against LeBron James and the Miami Heat.
