Today looks to be a busy day on the high school sports calendar in Southwest Washington.

Then again, maybe it won’t be.

The high school sports calendar includes 29 scheduled events. But other than four soccer matches and a golf match, we can’t be sure how much of the schedule actually will be played today. It all depends on the weather. That’s business as normal for spring sports in the Pacific Northwest.

The forecast for this week says there will be showers today, light rain on Tuesday, showers on Wednesday and Thursday before a mostly cloudy day on Friday.

Showers, light rain, showers, showers and mostly cloudy? That could be the forecast for any week in the next month and a half.

Well, any week but spring break. Spring break is always sunny because very few teams schedule events over spring break.

Sometimes it seems forecasting spring weather in the Pacific Northwest is tantamount to closing your eyes and throwing darts at the wall.

Trying to predict how the weather will impact local sporting events is sometimes even harder.

There will be days in which the rain falls all day. But just as you assume no baseball, softball or tennis events will be held, a few hardy soulscall in to report their scores.

It all just means that coaches and athletes must remain on their toes in the spring, and so must those of us who follow the spring sports.

So if you don’t like this week’s prep schedule, just wait a few minutes. It’s likely to change.

Here’s what is on the schedule for this week:

MONDAY: The Class 4A Greater St. Helens League opens league play for baseball and softball teams with Battle Ground playing at Prairie, Mountain View at Evergreen and Skyview at Heritage.

The 3A GSHL and 2A GSHL baseball teams, which opened league late last week, will continue their schedules, with teams aiming for Monday, Wednesday and Friday games.

TUESDAY: The 2A GSHL boys soccer schedule opens, led by Hockinson playing at Mark Morris.

WEDNESDAY: League play continues for 4A and 2A GSHL teams. The 3A GSHL is in league only for baseball. Even though Camas plays Union in softball on this date, it is officially a non-league game. Counting league games for 3A GSHL softball teams don’t start until after spring break.

THURSDAY: A full day of track and field meets include Columbia River at Camas in a matchup of 3A GSHL rivals. The Skyview boys, who are coming off a close win over Heritage, faces Evergreen. In baseball, Camas and River renew their rivalry.

FRIDAY: The 4A GSHL boys soccer teams open play as Prairie takes on Battle Ground, Evergreen faces Mountain View and Heritage meets Skyview. The Panther Twilight Invitational track and field meet will be held in Washougal. Camas, Fort Vancouver and Hockinson are among the local teams schedule to compete.
