Three times the Camas softball team defeated Union during the regular season. But the Titans made up for the losses by winning the game that put them in the district championship game.

Lindsay Sasse pitched her second shutout of the day, and Kadi Henderson had a pair of RBI singles as No. 3 Union upset No. 2 Camas 4-0 in the district playoffs Thursday at Fort Vancouver High School.

“We kind of told ourselves it was going to be tough to beat us a fourth time,” Union coach Alex Perry said.

The Papermakers’ seasons ends while the Titans play top seeded Kelso today at 4 p.m. for the championship.

Sasse pitched a 1-0 shutout against Hudson’s Bay in the earlier game, and the winning run was walked in in the sixth inning to advance the Titans to a fourth meeting with the Papermakers.

Sasse pitched 14 innings Thursday, giving up nine hits. Even late into her second game, Sasse not once thought of being tired.

“I was just focused on the batters, hoping my pitches were working,” the junior said. “They obviously were. I was pretty stoked about it.”

Sasse yielded two hits to Camas in the first frame, but did not give up another hit until the sixth inning when Erin Carson hit a triple up the right field line.

Four times Sasse had base runners on second or third base, and each time she pitched her way out.

“You can just look at her face,” Perry said. “She’s a true competitor. She did a good job channeling her energy and the team played great defense behind her.”

The Titans’ bats also went to work against Camas’ Mary Perdew. Kadi Henderson got Union on the board early with a RBI single her first at bat, and Jaime Henderson picked up the Titans’ second run with a RBI double that went to the centerfield fence in the fifth inning.

But Union wanted more of a safety net, so the Titans unloaded three hits inlcuding a RBI double from Sasse and a RBI single from Kadi Henderson in the top of the seventh.

“I just knew that we needed to get insurance runs,” Henderson said. “I needed to get them in.”

Carson led the Papermakers at leadoff, going 2 for 3 with a double and a triple. But she never made it home. She was tagged out in a pickle at home in the first, and left stranded at third in the sixth. Camas left four runners on base.

Union will play its third game in two days today. The Titans were the only team to beat Kelso in league play. But the Hilanders split the series with a 7-0 win later.
