Multiple winners: Heritage’s Ty Lang, Battle Ground’s Erik Cronrath and Prairie’s Taylor Schmidt won two events each.

The javelin had just left his hand, far from its apex, when Heritage’s Jacob Wilson raised his arms in celebration.

He knew.

“I didn’t know if it would be 200 feet, but I knew it was going to be a good one,” Wilson said.

It was a throw the Heritage junior had been looking for all season, a personal best of 195 feet, 1 inch, easily enough to win the javelin at the District 4 track and field meet Friday at McKenzie Stadium.

Wilson struggled all season to beat his personal best of 194 feet, which he set last season. Finally, it all came together on his sixth and final throw at district, when Wilson found the right combination of arm and leg speed.

“It’s been a mental block,” Wilson said. “Now 200 is my goal.”

As is winning the state championship. Wilson is two weeks away from attempting that goal, provides he gets past next week’s bi-district meet.

Skyview, capitalizing on a dominant performance during the opening day of the two-day meet, won the boys district title. The Storm scored 148 points to beat Heritage (124.5).

Skyview won five individual event titles, four on Wednesday. Heritage won three of its four event championships on Friday.

The Timberwolves were led by an unlikely senior, Ty Lang. He says he’s never run track until this year, not even in middle school. Prodded by his friend Donavon Cunningham, Lang tried track this spring, and now wishes he hadn’t waited so long.

During the two-day meet, Lang won the 100 and 200 meters, and finished second in the long jump. Lang shaved almost two-tenths of a second off his best 200 time with a 22.38-second clocking.

Heritage’s other event winner from Friday was Cunningham, who claimed the discus with a throw of 149-3. Skyview’s lone winner on Friday was its 1,600 relay team.

Battle Ground and Prairie each had a multiple-event winner. The Tigers’ Erik Cronrath claimed the 800 and 1,600, while Prairie’s Taylor Schmidt won the pole vault and 110 hurdles.
