Prep highlights: La Center girls capture 1A district track title
Saturday, May 17, 2008 By Columbian Sports StaffHannah Grigg won the pole vault by 1 foot, 6 inches, and Katrina Chamberlain won the high jump to lead the La Center girls to the 1A district track and field title at Stevenson on Friday.
Amanda Stump was a four-event winner to lead Stevenson to a runner-up finish. Stump won the 100 and 200 meter, the 300 hurdles, and was on the victorious 400 meter relay team.
Kelsey Penner won the triple jump for the Bulldogs with a leap of 33-4½.
Stevenson finishes fifth at districts — Brody Pestana, Lewis Meyers and Austin McCrum all took second in their respective events as the Bulldogs finished fifth at the 1A district track and field meet at Stevenson.
Pestana ran the 300 hurdles in 44.21, while Meyers had a high jump of 6-feet.
McCrum pole vaulted 11 feet, 6 inches.
Michael Dempsey and Aaron McGraw both finished fourth in the 800 and discus, respectively, as La Center finished 11th overall.
Chieftain duo gets ticket to state — Columbia River’s Sarah Bobbe won the 3,200 meter and Karah Ambrose won the high jump in the first day of the 3A bi-district meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
The top seven finishers advance to state.
Camas’ Robert Cramer finished runner-up in the long jump, while Union’s Kevin Reddington took third.
Softball
Union splits at 3A bi-district — Union remained alive in the bi-district tournament at Tacoma thanks to an opening-game victory.
Union began with a 7-0 shutout of Sumner, but then fell 8-3 to Timberline of Lacey.
The Titans face Mount Rainier in a noon elimination game today at the Sprinker Rec Center. If the Titans were to win, they would play for fourth place at 4 p.m.
In their victory, Union’s Lindsay Sasse pitched a five-hitter. Jamie Henderson and Katie Hertenstien each had two hits.
Ridgefield’s season ends — The Spudders fell to River Ridge 6-2 in the 2A district consolation semifinals in Centralia.
Alexa Hanley hit a two-run home run in the opening frame to start things off for River Ridge. Hanley finished 3 for 4 with four RBI.
Sydney Ferryman led the Spudders, going 2 for 3 with a double.
Chenae Ryder pitched the first four innings and struck out five, while Karlee Kammer pitched the final three, striking out five and giving up one earned run.
Girls tennis
2A district — Hockinson’s Mackenzie McWilliams will face Tumwater’s Rikki Anderson for the singles final today at Mint Valley in Longview.
McWilliams defeated Aberdeen’s Taylor Relich 6-1, 6-1 in her opening match, and then defeated Mari Pace of Black Hills in the semifinals 6-1, 6-3. |
