Camas picks inaugural hall class
Thursday, July 03, 2008 By The ColumbianThe Camas High School booster club has selected 10 individuals, two teams, one coach, and an honor candidate to become the first class inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame.
The ceremony will take place Sept. 27 at the high school.
Individual honorees are: Gary Ostenson (basketball, football, track and field 1963-65); Ed Huston (basketball, 1965-67); Bill Bradley (wrestling, 1977-80); Tom Wallenborn (basketball, 1954-56); Don Gigler (football, 1936-38); Bob Shafer (football, basketball, baseball, 1935); Glenn Hartman (wrestling, 1972-75); Dennis Huston (basketball, 1956-59); Marianne Gerde (basketball, track, soccer, volleyball, 1988-92); and Annie Arndt Sumpter (tennis, 1974-77).
The 1937 and 1969 football teams also will be inducted, as will wrestling coach Charlie Hinds.
Doc Harris will be named to the hall of honor.
Preuninger, Burrus to compete for Concordia
Two Clark County athletes will take their skills to Concordia University in Portland.
Drew Preuninger, a four-year starter for the Camas Papermakers, will continue his basketball career with the Cavaliers.
“Drew is a very talented combo guard. He has the tenacity, quickness and intelligence to play the point, and he shoots it well enough to play the two,” Concordia coach Brad Barbarick said.
Preuninger is Camas’ all-time leader in assists and games played.
Meanwhile, recent Heritage graduate Josh Burrus will compete in track and field and cross country for the Cavs.
Burrus qualified for the Class 4A state cross country championships three times.
“Josh is one of the top cross country runners in the Portland/Vancouver area as well as a fine track and field athlete,” Concordia coach Randy Dalzell said. “He is a team leader with a great work ethic, and he will be a welcome addition to our men’s distance group.”
Freedom Bowl Classic set July 12 at River stadium
The Freedom Bowl Classic, an all-star football game featuring recent graduates of Southwest Washington high schools, will be July 12 at Columbia River High School.
The 7:30 p.m. game, now in its sixth year, raises funds for youth at Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Two youth football games will be played at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
