Hazel Dell Metro 13s fall short in title bid
Saturday, July 19, 2008 By Columbian Sports StaffThe Hazel Dell Metro 13-year-old Babe Ruth baseball team came up short of a state title.
The team had to quickly recover from an 8-0 semifinal win over Kelso that ended at 1 a.m. Friday to be at the field in Kennewick for a 10 a.m. start to take on Thurston County in the final game.
Thurston County came away with an 8-2 victory and the state title.
Both HDM and Thurston County advance to the regional tournament in Kelso, beginning July 27.
HDM received a strong performance from Reid McKinney. He was the winning pitcher in the semifinal and then had three hits and two RBI in the championship game.
Babe Ruth 14-year-olds — Hazel Dell Metro moved into the elimination round of the state tournament at Aberdeen with a 2-1 record after defeating Centralia 13-3. Michael Schwinos went 3 for 5 with two doubles and five RBI in the win.
HDM plays Mason County at noon today with the winner facing Chehalis at 6 p.m.
Babe Ruth 18-year-olds — Showtime advanced to the No. 1 seed game at 1:30 p.m. today in the state tournament after defeating host Aberdeen 7-3.
Matt Simpson and Tracy Chelini each drove in two runs for Showtime.
Showtime opened play on Thursday with a 10-0 win over Burbank.
Major baseball (11-12) — Central Vancouver fell in its opening game of the state tournament at Mill Creek, losing 9-0 to Greater Richland.
Central Vancouver next plays at 7 p.m. Monday.
Senior baseball (15-16) — Fort Vancouver was eliminated with a 1-0 loss to Pacwest at the state tournament in Burien. No details were reported.
