Two decades ago, the state Fish and Wildlife Commission told the Southwest Washington office to pick a stream to stop planting hatchery steelhead and test as wild-fish-only water. The regional biologist picked the Wind River, a good test spot since most of the watershed’s habitat is protected in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

It seems like a long time since Bill Doba coached Washington State, yet it’s been less than two full seasons. For anyone interested, Doba is living in retirement in Vandalia, Mich. Doba had a good run in Pullman, 19 years and the last five as head coach. He left the top job with a winning record 30-29, but also left the talent cupboard virtually empty — as evidenced by the Cougs’ mark since he departed.
