Vancouver woman celebrates 100 years

Odgen — Consuelo “Connie” Maria Herod, one of six children, was born on Aug. 6, 1911, in Los Angeles. According to her daughter, Ramona Arnold of Vancouver, her mother has, from a young age, had a mind of her own. She also was the one everyone called when catastrophe struck.

Birthday bash honors centenarians

The Fifty and Better program hosted a birthday party for three centenarians March 28 at the Luepke Center. Friends and family members helped the trio celebrate the occasion. Gunnar Matsen, born March 18, 1911, in the woods north of Spokane, has lived in Vancouver for more than 25 years. Matsen was a wireman for the Bonneville Power Administration. He raised three children. He lives at Kamlu Retirement Inn.

AARP Tax-Aide offers help with taxes through April 18

Free tax assistance and preparation for taxpayers with low and moderate incomes is available from AARP Tax-Aide through April 18. Assistance is offered to people of all ages, with special attention to those age 60 and older. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers, trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, will offer assistance with personal income-tax returns at the following sites:

Anniversary milestone: Jacobson

Marian and Art Jacobson met in high school in Columbus, N.D. After she graduated in the spring of 1938, the two were married by a judge on Oct. 15, 1938, in Seattle. Numerous family members will join them at a local Mexican restaurant on their 72nd anniversary Friday. The couple lived in Auburn when Art worked for a company making containers for frozen food. When the company relocated to Portland, the Jacobsons moved to Vancouver. They bought a house about 10 blocks east of Southwest Washington Medical Center, which at the time was practically in the country. They still live in the same house, but now it is surrounded by other houses.

Life held joy, family, love to end of woman’s 102 years

Katheryn B. “Kay” Hill always tried to see the good in things and forget about the bad. Her daughter, Bev Clark, is trying to do the same thing. Clark’s mother had a wonderful party as she celebrated her 102nd birthday April 24. There were about 100 family members and friends at Hill’s birthday party including her brother, Dick Beckham, 95, who flew in from Utah to attend the festivities.

Betty Lewis Frewing’s 100 years of life have taken her around the globe in ventures helping the less fortunate. She was born in Salem, Ore., and for the past 25 years she has lived at Willamette View Manor in Milwaukie, Ore.

90 friends, family celebrate a century with Alabama native

Cascade Park: Augusta Evans Carter celebrated her 100th birthday Dec. 27 with about 90 family members and friends at The Bedford retirement home, 13303 S.E. McGillivray Blvd. She was married for 40 years to Larry Evans, and they had one daughter, Sara Evans Dougherty.

Shumway: Inez Jonet Budde was born Dec. 9, 1909, in Burton, near Vancouver. She attended elementary school in Orchards and high school in Battle Ground, graduating from Vancouver High School in January 1929.
