Bio

Business reporter who writes and blogs about the housing industry, real estate, construction and development in Vancouver, (Clark County) Washington.

My beat also includes business stories on local retail and restaurant trends. I've worked for The Columbian's business section since Jan. 2006.

Before that, I covered Clark County business as a reporter for The Vancouver Business Journal.

I was raised in Stevenson, but Vancouver has been my home since 1976. I am a graduate of Washington State University. I am married and have two adult children, a daughter and a son.

Hello Cami, I'm not sure where to direct this concern. Has the Columbian heard any rumbling about the most recent property taxes? My property assessment remains the same for 2010 but my taxes increase over $1400.I'm still in shock. Gary

Cami,
Did that conversation we had yesterday make it to print?

I'm sure there's going to be a story on the new property taxes assessments in the mail. Don't miss me...

Value increased 30%, taxes increased by 56% ($21,831). The previous assessment was only 10 months before. No improvements to the property in years. I suspect that a "soak the rich" solution is being implemented.

I would really like to know why it is that those who make the decisions and selection of consultants and contractors in our government agencies such as WSDOT, City of Vancouver, Camas, Washougal, Woodland and Clark, Cowlitz and Skamania County Municipal offices choose to hire contractors and firms from outside of the area like Oregon and Idaho and Montana when there is a contractor and firm in their local jurisdiction, with the same skill and expertise or... who could gain more expertise from getting hired? I might add that many contractors and consultants who live in these same jurisdictions help keep those agency decision makers employed by paying taxes for living within their jurisdictional boundaries. If these agencies want to help the communities whom they are responsible for shouldn't they be hiring locally and not just hiring the large companies from outside the state? No wonder SW Washington has the highest unemployment in the state. All the Southwest Washington government agencies are hiring Oregon to do the work... I'd like these agencies to be reminded that hiring local is good business. In fact many Oregon agencies have this as a policy, why not enact it in to SW Washington?
