Hi Golden,
You're spot on that it was meant as a quickie for folks who drive in the area. As a news organization, we're still learning how to use the internet. It's still very much a work in progress, especially as new things like Twitter become part of the model. There, people love getting information in 140 characters. On our site, people seem disappointed by short stories.

We try to post before 7 a.m. each morning, but sometimes not much happened over night. It's my job (I'm in at 6:30 a.m. each day) to write web briefs that we often take heat on in the comments section because they're sometimes not very newsy. It's largely to let readers know we're here, and we're paying attention.

Anyways, I thought I would share our approach with a frequent reader. Thanks for reading. Best, -Bob Albrecht

Gold,
Sorry I didn't check your post before now. Just so busy with son who broke his foot to helping daughter with her wedding plans and her move to Alaska in July.
Yes I remember the strawberry farms, it was either the Ashoff's farm or Tripold. Ashoff (spelling) was a family friend of my inlaws. Almost had a marriage between their grandson and hubbys sister. I still go to the Barn on I think is on 148th off airport way for fresh fruits and veggies in the summer and fall. Anywho, Ashoffs sold many years ago when none of the grandkids wanted to take the farm over and of course a big development company bought and built industrial warehouses on the land.

Just FYI golden. Something to think about: You can turn EVERYTHING on your tax bill into just pennies by using your point. Either the expense was worth it -- and it's fair for you and others to feel that way -- or it isn't -- and it's fair for others to feel that way.

But you're welcome to look at your tax bill and you can justify any expense by breaking it up by household or -- if that's not enough -- how much you pay each day for something.

Again, just something to think about. Thanks

Hmm north side of 84...nope, don't know the name. I'll ask my sisinlaw if she remembers. Ashoff's was on corner of sandy and I want to say 122nd (Troutdale). Tripolds were more Gresham. I know there were others like the one on the corner east from Ashoff's that sold out of a small stand. A few right off Marine drive. Aww heck I'll ask my sisinlaw and get back to you.

Hi Golden,

No she has never been in law enforcement, but could have if she had chose to. She is just very well trained and works hard to teach other Women that they do have the right to protect themselves as well as others and put her money where her mouth is. She is a Nationally recognize firearms trainer, her specialty is working with women, I am not even allowed to attend her classes. Now of course she has lived all over the world, when I was being stationed in various areas, many of them not very nice. She is a gun rights advocate, but she is more of an advocate of not being a victim, and doing her part to help other not be victims as well..

I have had enough of Basil/Giles.
No matter what anyone comes with on this site according to him it's either rw garbage, not the truth or whatever. He puts so many off with his insulting "my way or no way" attitude.

goldenoldie,

I am Ace High. The reason I came on as kendollin2010 was because I got banned for speaking out against the Columbian banning all of the left leaning posters while someone like Ray Menlo was allowed to stay on with what he writes. I just figured why be serious anymore. I thought about the angle of being our "candidate" from a parallel Universe and ran with it. I am 50 years old and pushing my imagination keeps me young.

I have purposely tried to keep my writing style different and have enjoyed the guesses at who I am. I have given many, many clues to the fact that I am Ace High and a couple of people have gotten it, I think, Kendallln2010 for one.

I am only going to keep up the kendollin2010 persona until Kendallin2010 declares or goes away. I would appreciate that you didn't out me, even though people can read your wall.

Thanks,

Ace High

Thank you,

With what is going on in this world today, humor, our imaginations, and contact with our loved ones is the only way to cope.

My heart aches when I see the pictures of the animals that are dieing in the Gulf of Mexico. In the pictures their eyes are asking, what did we do to you to deserve this. I hope that the Earth can recover.

Gee Goldie, it's 12:02 am 6/18 and The Columbian still has the bridge/light rail discussion shut down. It is the only discussion that has been shut down, so maybe The Columbian is trying to keep the pom-pom wavers from looking even more ridiculous than they now look.

The only way I could read your later comments after my last post was to leave you this note. You're kicking butt, Btw.

artimus — June 18, 2010 at 12:06 a.m. ( reply | | suggest removal )

I think The Columbian froze the article because they didn't want any members of the CRC to see such a negative response to their goofy ideas on a press release.

Putting it onto the editorial page "hides" it.

Yes, you are kicking butt. You get better every time the "spoiled brats" at The Columbian run a "rehash" article to try to "wear down" the opposition.

This latest "idea" of the CRC is a corker. It's even got GKortes marveling at the stupidity of the "planners". You have to wonder where they find such nutcases to serve on the CRC?

Golden,
I like to read your posts as they seem well balanced and well thought out. I hesitate to post as I have an inside to some of the decision making about the bridge, water front property ect. Hope you show up to the city council meetings to express your opinion as more and more people share them. If you want to follow the trend in policy keep an eye on the COV Transportation director that planned to retire this year and instead is heading up these large projects. Also check out the new "gate" to be purchased and installed on the pedestrian bridge....ask how much that puppy will cost. :-)

pineywoman1 — August 1, 2010 at 7:50 a.m. ( reply | | suggest removal )

ok here is my 2 cents worth. The people making most of the decisions about these projects are a relatively small group within the COV. They are not stupid, mean people, they are just from a different background than the people who either grew up here or moved out of California years ago to escape what Vancouver is becoming. They sincerely believe they are acting for the "greater" good and that those opposing this project are short sighted and don't see the "big" picture. Direct your comments right to the ones who are pushing this forward. Thayer Rougherback (sp), Pat McDonald, Brian Carlson. These managers are the ones that have more to gain when the big money comes in. I know that citizens that band together and talk to city staff in a reasonable but firm manner can make a difference. I attended a planning meeting opposing the first draft on the urban growth boundries. I don't live in the city but was Prez of a local equine group and they heard us. We filled the city chambers and the new codes are much more animal friendly than was originally put forth. The amazing thing is that I still have my job and the manager in charge of planning is our new department head. She told me that sometimes they (COV staff) get off in left field but are willing to listen and move more to the center when it is called to their attention. This is Laura Hudson so she is another one I would pay attention to.

pineywoman1 — August 1, 2010 at 2:48 p.m. ( reply | | suggest removal )

And on another note. Give me your real name and I would be happy to pass on my opinion that you should be heard. If you don't mind I will let staff know that you are much respected on these bloggs and it would be a good PR move to hear you out. :-). Don't know how much my opinion will count but I am known to speak pretty plainly.

pineywoman1 — August 1, 2010 at 2:51 p.m. ( reply | | suggest removal )

With all due respect pineywoman1, I have shared publicly my stance on the bridge, the light rail, the waterfront project and various other issues concerning Vancouver, Clark County and the State of Washington. You may be sharing good intentions to help others become more involved, but I cannot accept your offer and will not share my name via the internet. Yes, he was fined by the dept of ecology because one of his employees dumped paint in a drain. Yes, he's responsible for it as it was his employee. No, he did NOT tell the employee to dump the paint in the drain.

You ask if I know sin. No, I don't. I don't believe in the concept of sin. That's a religious concept.

However, driven by the normal human fears that all human animals feel, I've made many MISTAKES in my long life. I've hurt myself and others with my mistakes, but I've also learned from my errors so that I don't make those mistakes anymore. BUT, I'm not a sinner. Nor have I violated any of the taboos that the human species feels shame about. I think what you mean by sin, a primatologist might call a taboo.

Independent thought and responsible exchange of ideas is a more mature, constructive approach and we can always expect that from you.

goldenoldie - here goes my anonymity, as DJBiggz is very popular, but he apparently will be on the news at noon. DJBiggz is my son. He says the vehicles (at least the van) belonged to a flooring business there. Neither vehicle seems to be connected with Charlies. How can you support that? I always thought that you were well researched, open minded, and TRUE to the FACTS. If you believe ANYTHING bob says with your brain, then I have lost respect for you. If this is just your heart talking, then you are not as inclusive and tolerant as I had originally thought. I am disappointed.

Stumbled across your post(s) about the casino and their indebtedness and you wondering how they can accomplish building while in debt. In debt does not mean insolvent or unable to do business. Leverage is very important in the business world as it allows you to leverage your income potential by taking out loans (debt) in order to further your business, grow, etc. etc. The problems arise, just like the recent housing issue that we've been in, when your leverage (debt) climbs to a point where you can't manage it. Just because a company or corporation is in debt, doesn't mean that they can't operate ... it's a sound business tactic that the strongest entities should leverage themselves to grow or extend their reach. The more leverage you have though, the more susceptible you are should the economy or model change. I don't know the pure financials, income statement or balance sheet of the Mohegan tribe so I can't speak to their specifics. But being $1.XB in debt may or may not be a concern. As long as they can service that debt through future income, the debt isn't a current problem. However, if they take on another $500M in casino development debt and we slip into a double dip recession and patronage drops 50% ... there is then real concern, especially if it were a prolonged event.

I am not against Unions, I am unhappy with Union leadership. I feel strongly that unions are important, but their leadership has become too political.
Remember when we met at the Fire Station? One of the firemen suggested I speak to their union. The Unions political officer refused to even entertain the idea saying it would be unfair to Jacks.

Hey GO!

As someone who was targeted by a few master trolls not long ago, I find that not engaging in any quid pro quo with them helps. You're an experienced mom: think tantruming 2 year old!

Hang in there. I enjoy your posts and friendly, kind-hearted spirit.

Peace and good will to you, my friend.

Hey, GO: If you can tear yourself away from this never-ending squabble with a tiger named fiscal, I would love to hear more of your thoughts on HAARP and the birds dropping from the sky in Arkansas and now, Louisiana. I have been reading about that stuff, too, and it is fascinating, to say the least. Makes ya' wonder.

Peace my friend. I miss your old style of posts when you weren't so hell-bent on doing a number on the feline. Let it go. And come back to the CRC/light rail stuff that got me thinkin' You do good research. You read a lot. You ask good questions.

But fighting is a waste of your intellect.

Just my humble opinion. No offense meant.

t’s so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don’t say it.

A lot of beautiful people are stupid. There’s a tremendous amount of idiots who look so good. It’s frightening.

As far as we know, our computer has never had an undetected error.

Oddly, Lou, says he doesn't see any need, or he'd have his web staff do it.

Sorry, Lou, but it's not about what you see so much as it is for others. By turning it down, I think you are hiding, esp. when you talk so much in print. You write as a wannabe leader, but I think that is just a sham. I believe you just don't want to face any honest, tough questions, which is 'curious' for a newspaper editor.

Disappointing, but not much of a surprise.

Actually I like to deal in facts. Trains are extremely efficient and in our area are almost purely fueled by renewable power. (Dams, wind and geothermal.) I ride the train as often as I can, and I find it safe, comfortable, convenient and dependable. All the things the current bridge is not. I also like the fact that I can actually relax and look out the window to discover all the wonderful things that are Portland. On I-5 I can’t do that. I have traveled extensively, and I can say without any doubt that people come here as tourists, in part, because of the simple transportation system. I love traveling to cities where I can ride the train to within walking distance to my hotel. What cities are like this? Vancouver BC. New York. Chicago. There are many more, but I think that makes my point. What cities do I hate? The cities that have poor public transportation systems devoid of light rail, particularly from the airport to downtown. These cities typically spend their money on more and more highways. Five highs and growing…no thanks.

Actually, Goldie, I'm going to be glad when I don't have to read about "kill, baby, kill" from all of the "sportsmen"-like fisher people. You people are sick. Why not get up close and personal about selfish killing and just take clubs and beat them to death. Oh, but wait, they're bigger than the little white pups that are slaughtered on the ice...but that's exactly what you all sound like: ignorant villagers wanting to slaughter something from nature. Disgusting! Stop the GOD DAMNED commercial over-takes, and then go after the gill netters and the tribes...then you might have some fish to catch. I just heard there's a new docudrama based on the life of the Columbian News Publishing Company. It's called -

"As the Lonely Wind Blows"

So how's all that hopey changey "Oh it's so much nicer on Facebook" working with all those Facebook posts??? Oh wait...

there's hardly any every day. What are you up to??? about 30 per day??? My, those articles have a low count of comments. Must be all that civility you speak of.

So Lou...are you asking yourself "whu happened" yet? Seems to me there's a lot more activity on the forums lately...and so civil, too! Too bad you have a great group of folks posting in the forums...the basement of your newspaper. So how much longer are you allowing the forums to continue??? When the Facebook comments dwindle to single digits per day?

Please explain to me how this comment by Forethought was derogatory to the folks at the Columbian yet other comments attacking character are still allowed on the FB side of the C???

"""As someone who is friendly with a handful of staff at The Columbian (including a relative), I can tell you this: 1. The Facebook initiative has Lou's interests at heart. He wants absolute control of any criticisms leveled at the paper, constructive or otherwise. 2. These controlling tendencies have led to the resignations of several talented staff members, including the previous web editor who moved his family here only to have no authority in his position. He took them as far as he could considering. But, the lack of dedication to site planning and resistance to the opinions of hired consultants resulted in losing someone who has more social media fans than the paper itself. 3. The Facebook experiment is considered a huge failure among staff. The intent to grow traffic through social media has topped out at 1500 fans. Barely the audience of a popular teenage girl. 4. Lou's recent column had staffers' eyes rolling, and even some Facebook commenters were deleted for seeing through the obvious ploy to save face and gain comments. 5. Staff feels forced to engage in social media. Yet when they do, they are criticized heavily if they don't do it the way their editor prefers. Consensus is that he is so enamored of the spotlight, he wants others as watered-down as possible. 6. Morale is at an all-time low in the newsroom and other departments are wondering what the real strategy is for columbian.com. Rumor is a paywall may limit the free access to stories like larger NY Times. That move would surely disrupt the advertising the site gets. 7. This post will be deleted soon. But, my friends at the paper deserve someone to speak up on their behalf. And readers should know that their anonymous opinions were never valued, especially if they were counter to the paper's board.

To all in Columbianland who might chance upon reading this comment:

I want to personally thank the Columbian for providing a public soundboard for everyone in our community and beyond. I have learned much from my two years of posting in the comments...and in recent months, the forum. I have come to find some wonderful people while posting...some I have agreed, some not...but either way, the discussion has always been a pleasure to experience. I have decided to move on...away from the discussion room better known as the Forum - and as I end my tenure as a regular on the C, there's some people I wish to comment to.

ELISI: Your wit and wisdom, your kindness and understanding and everything else about you has allowed me to see life in a totally different perspective...and I thank you my friend.

Manthou: You are a woman of spirit and strength. You hold to your convictions in life and I show much respect for you. You have taught me to open my mind, to see things from different perspectives and I thank you.

DeeLittle: You are a wonderful person...just from what I have read in your comments. I so hope you continue to share your thoughts here on the C.

Hawkeye: Keep doin' what you're doin' on the C. Your humor, common sense and patience with me can never go unnoticed by me.

Rightwing Extremist: What can I say...you are a one of a kind, my friend.

Mr. Basil Seal: Because of you, I have learned to do my homework...to do the research before I put a comment on the C. I admit I didn't always find the information you sought which would back up my comment...but it's a learning process.

Roger: I'm so very sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I think you could honestly say you have an extended "Family" here who are there for you as I am.

Karma: Oh my friend..I've so shared talking about gardening and other wonderful discussions with you.

Luvithere: Your open mind and patience with me is never to go unnoticed. I'm thankful for good friends.

Nailingit: Don't think I'd forgotten you. Your strength, your quality of discussion...and your way of always looking for the good side of life to share with all can never go unnoticed.

And to everyone else...Allen, that means you...and you too, Alleycat and SportyJames and others whose names I didn't mention...

Thanks for keeping me on my toes! Allen, I'm thinkin' about ya! I wish you well!

Never fear my friends, I'm still around, still reading the comments...still enjoying the good laughs!

Take care, all!!!
