HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) — A Hillsboro man has been accused of stealing $50,000 from a man with dementia who was in his care.

Shawn Vilhauer is scheduled to be charged Tuesday with two felonies.

Police say Vilhauer took over paying the bills for 70-year-old Gary Murray but was also using the elderly man’s money to pay his own bills.

Capt. Jeff Williams of the Forest Grove Police Department says elder abuse is not limited to physical and emotional mistreatment. He advises family members to keep a close eye on the checks and documents of older adults.

Murray’s bank alerted the family to what they thought might be a problem with his bank account.
