High winds and a choppy Columbia River sank a tribal boat near the Highway 97 Bridge at Maryhill and two others were swamped Thursday while fishing for spring chinook salmon.
Stuart Ellis of the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission said the crew of the sank boat was rescued.
Washington and Oregon extended the treaty season in the Bonneville, The Dalles and John Day pools until noon today to give Indian fishermen more time to remove their nets.
The season was scheduled to end at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Ellis said the winds were worst in the John Day pool. The wind is forecast to lessen on Friday morning, before building again in the afternoon.
There were 465 nets counted in the three pools. The tribes are expected to land about 12,000 salmon.
