WASHINGTON (AP) — Cuban right-hander Yunesky Maya has been optioned to the Washington Nationals’ club in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League.
He’ll become a teammate there of 44-year-old Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez, the Cuban pitcher who used to be in the majors and is the half brother of Nationals starter Livan Hernandez.
The 28-year-old Maya recently signed a major league contract with the Nationals. He pitched for Cuba in the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classics.
