LEXINGTON, Ohio (AP) — Helio Castroneves understands intentionally blocking a fellow IndyCar driver is dangerous, potentially costly and against the rules.
The Brazilian star just wishes series officials would be more consistent when they called it.
Castroneves was black-flagged by officials late in last month’s race at Edmonton for blocking Team Penske teammate Will Power. He was later fined $60,000 for a postrace tirade for which he apologized.
IndyCar president of competition Brian Barnhart stood by the ruling on Friday, saying officials have done a good job of policing drivers who have taken illegal maneuvers to maintain their track position.
Barnhart said the redesigned IndyCar that will debut in 2012 could allow the series to loosen the rules on blocking, but that other considerations will also play a factor in how the rule is interpreted.
