BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) — A Navy doctor has been arrested at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor for not registering as a sex offender.

The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office says 48-year-old Anthony L. Velasquez was arrested Monday, posted bond on Tuesday and was released.

Kitsap County authorities were contacted by the Navy about the possible violation. State law requires people convicted of certain crimes to register as sex offenders within three days of arriving in the state.

Velasquez arrived in Kitsap County in early July after being convicted in a court martial at a Navy base in Japan. He is in the process of transitioning out of the Navy and moving to Kentucky. His attorney, Thomas Weaver, says he would have registered in Kentucky, but now Velasquez will be staying in Kitsap County to face charges.
