MIAMI (AP) — Florida Marlins left fielder Chris Coghlan will undergo knee surgery Wednesday and may miss the reason of the season after being hurt during a victory celebration.
Coghlan had hoped to return soon and delay surgery until after the season, but on Sunday he said he decided he can’t play until the injury is repaired.
The 2009 NL Rookie of the Year says recovery time is four to eight weeks, meaning he might be able to play the final couple of weeks of the regular season in a best-case scenario.
Coghlan hurt himself July 25 delivering a celebratory pie to the face of teammate Wes Helms after a walkoff win over Atlanta.
Coghlan is hitting .268 with five home runs and 28 RBIs in 91 games.
