DAYTON, Ore. (AP) — A 19-year-old Oregon man has died after jumping off a bridge to avoid being seen by police.

The Yamhill County sheriff’s office said Douglas Etter of Dayton was walking with friends early Tuesday when they saw a sheriff’s patrol car approaching.

Deputies said Etter told his friends he did not want to be seen and jumped over the guardrail, falling 46 feet to a steep and rocky slope.

The deputy who was on patrol responded immediately and summoned emergency help, but Etter died at the scene.

Sheriff Jack Crabtree said it was an accidental death caused by Etter simply misjudging the height of the bridge.
