ZURICH (AP) — The inaugural Diamond League series will crown 16 champions on Thursday, giving the season-long winners in each event the right to be called the No. 1 in the world.
The Weltklasse meeting in Zurich has long been called the “one-day Olympics” by track and field aficionados for its depth of talent. The 14-date global series ends Aug. 27 in Brussels with finals in the remaining 16 track and field disciplines.
American 110-meter hurdler David Oliver describes Weltklasse as “the best meeting on the European circuit.”
Oliver is among five athletes with an unbeatable lead in their event points standings scheduled to compete. Each will collect a $40,000 first prize.
