MONROE, Wash. (AP) — The state prison at Monroe has build a memorial to honor the 39 employees who have died since 1987.

During a dedication ceremony on Friday, a cannon volley was fired in each person’s honor.

Twenty of the people honored worked as corrections officers and 19 held other positions, such as librarian, cook, nurse or secretary, at the state’s largest prison complex.

The most recently deceased was Correctional Lt. Bruce Ramsey, who was killed Feb. 17 in a traffic accident on the US Highway 2.

The memorial features a pyramid displaying people’s names. Names, positions and the year they died are engraved at the side of the memorial.
