COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders has been suspended indefinitely by coach Steve Spurrier for violating team rules.
Saunders was not at practice Monday night. Spurrier said after the workout that Saunders’ absence was not connected to the NCAA’s questioning of the senior this summer.
Spurrier identified Saunders, the 6-foot-6 senior, as the South Carolina player interviewed by NCAA investigators looking into possible rules violations at a party in Miami in May. Spurrier has said Saunders told the coach he had done nothing wrong.
Spurrier says Saunders’ status for the Gamecocks’ opener against Southern Miss on Sept. 2 will be determined later.
