SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — San Jose Earthquakes general manager of soccer operations John Doyle has received a contract extension that takes him through the 2011 season and includes an option for the 2012 campaign.

Doyle has been the GM since Oct. 3, 2007, overseeing the club’s return to the field in Major League Soccer in 2008 following a two-year absence.

Earlier this month, Doyle pulled off one of the franchise’s biggest acquisitions ever by signing former Hull and Manchester City midfielder Geovanni. He is the Earthquakes’ first ever designated player not subject to the league’s salary budget.

Doyle hired coach Frank Yallop in ’07 and built a coaching staff and team that has San Jose in fourth place in the Western Conference.
